Part two of our teacher field trip was to the education center at Monticello. Our guide was wonderful and she gave us some great ideas for our habitat.
The 2nd grade teachers took a field trip to the TJ nursery on our teacher workday to observe their small rain garden. They also donated 5 plants to put in our new habitat.
To get ready for the fall planting, we weeded for days! In early September students worked on teams to research a list of Native Virginian plants to add to the habitat. Then they voted on which ones to buy and plant. We started by assessing what was already there. Was there anything worth keeping? Some trees, like service berries, river birches, and waxsaw, were in great shape, but most of the plants needed to go. |
